Marvene Ash - Bio
Marvene Ash was born in 1952 in the Western Queensland town of Goondiwindi. Although she still works from a studio on Brigalow Creek just a few kilometres North of Goondiwindi, for many years she has lived at Maleny in the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast.
Marvene’s Maleny studio is an extension of an impressive old dairy shed which was built early last century. Since 2012 she has exhibited from a gallery that is attached to the Maleny studio as well as in a number of galleries throughout Queensland.
Previous to settling in Maleny, Marvene pursued a career of exhibiting, art teaching and art related travel for 15 years following her art training years in Brisbane in the 1970’s.
Marvene works from life, using a painterly style of brushwork. In her landscapes, she matches the act of applying paint to the vitality that is sensed in nature. She enjoys the complexity of line that is built up across the surface of the painting and the ambiguous sense of space that is created through colour - an interplay of the abstract and figurative qualities within the image.
The studio paintings are concerned with the development of a personal symbolism that often uses a single image compositions of domestic objects.
Whether painting en plein air or responding to the thoughtfully chosen subjects in her studio Marvene’s approach remains direct and personal in her desire to paint, ‘not just the painted thing, but the forces that created it’.
