In this series, inspired by Kathleen McArthur’s important achievements, I have worked en plein air and in the studio to draw attention to the inherent nature of the Wallum landscape and to include the wild forces that shape the coastal heathland.
Using the gouache medium in an expressive way that is integral to the idea, the works include underlying themes of vitality, vulnerability and strength. The Curramundi landscapes, in particular, are reminders of the salty struggle that is unique to the Wallum flora.
I used the structural device of a ‘bouquet’ in a suite of five paintings which has allowed me to focus on the delightful variety of textures in the Wallum as well as to implicitly carry an appropriate message of appreciation and celebration for the work of Kathleen McArthur.
